Bleriot Ferry Campground Alberta Recreational Area.
The
Bleriot Ferry
Badlands campground is
located on the
Dinosaur
Trail in the Red Deer valley
approximately
25km
north of
Drumheller.
The campground is named after the
nearby
Bleriot Ferry that crosses
the
Red Deer River
and is one of the few remaining
cable ferries in Alberta.
There is no cost to cross over on
the
Bleriot Ferry as it is
maintained by the
government. It operates
before and after freeze up. The natural, odd shaped land
formations nearby are called the
Badlands.
These arid softer sedimentary rock
formations have been created by
several million years of erosion.
There
are 28 campsites with picnic tables
and fire pits. The campground offers
water, dry toilets, camp kitchen,
firewood and refuse containers.
Bleriot Ferry Campground is
nestled in a mature
Cotton Wood
forest next to the
Red Deer River.
Most of the campsites are divided by
willow bushes that create a wind
break and privacy.
You can hike for
several miles in both directions along the
Red Deer River
and explore the surrounding
Badlands.
Make sure to pack plenty of water in
the summer as it can get very hot
and dry here. The
Cactus plants
found growing is a good indication
of just how arid the
Badlands
are.
Black flies
seem to love this area and can be
very annoying during the summer
months and early fall.
Tolman Bridge
campground is located
42km
north of here and
Starland Campground
is located
20km
north of here.
The Towne of
Drumheller
and the
Royal Tyrrell
Museum are
18km
south of here.
Night
skies here rank # 4 on the
Bortle Scale, the highway to the campground
entrance is paved.
