Hilliard's Bay Campground Alberta Provincial
Park.
Hilliard's Bay Campground and
Provincial Park is located next to
Lesser Slave Lake approximately
122km
west of the town of
Slave Lake.
Approximately
398km
north of the City of
Edmonton. There are
a total of 189 well kept campsites. This
campground offers camping for both
tents and larger RV's, group
camping, clean small sandy beach,
canoeing &
kayaking, play grounds, picnic shelters, public
phone, showers, water,
power,
fire wood, picnic tables, sani dump,
swimming areas, boat launch,
fish cleaning stations, ice fishing,
hiking, wildlife watching
and snowmobiling off site.
The campsites are well treed and
located
in the surrounding Aspen and Spruce forest. Hilliard's Bay
and Lesser Slave Lake has excellent
northern Pike,
Lake Whitefish, Walleye and Yellow
Perch fishing, you'll need a
fishing
license to try your luck.
The bridge
on the highway at Grouards Channel is often full of
fisherman. Hilliard's Bay campground
is great for families with young
children, the kids can spend hours
at the beach and nearby playgrounds.
Lesser Slave lake is one of
Alberta's largest lakes and is excellent for
power boats, waterskiing, sailing,
windsurfing, canoeing and kayaking.
Be careful on the water here, severe
dangerous winds often blow in and
quickly turn this lake into a
boaters nightmare. Lesser Slave Lake
is part of the Athabasca River
drainage basin and
has an approximate total surface
area of
1160sqkm with an
average depth of
11.4m,
maximum depth of
20.5m.
Hilliard's Bay Provincial Park also attracts a large
variety of migrating
waterfowl and is a great place for
birders. For those who like to
hike or mountain bike there is a
5.5km
trail that follows the lakeshore.
Marten River
Campground is located
approximately
154km
east of here. Night skies here
rank #3 on
the
Bortle Scale.
This is
bear country,
food and food related items must be
stored properly.
