First Come or Reserve
Location/Description
Location: 40kms north of Drumheller. 10kms east of Morin in the Red Deer valley Alberta.
Description: Starland campground is where the Alberta Star Party is held every September. The campground is mainly located on open grass next to the Red Deer River with 50 sites for both RV’s and tents. Most of the campsites are open to each other allowing for spacious group camping with a few choice sites located next to the river.
Amenities include picnic tables, fire pits, water, dry toilets, refuse containers, camp kitchen, firewood, ball diamonds, boat launch and playground. The surrounding odd shaped land formations are called badlands. These arid softer sedimentary rock formations have been created by several million years of erosion.
If you want to explore the surrounding Badlands you can hike for several miles in both directions along the red deer river. Make sure to pack plenty of water during summer as it can be very hot and dry. The Cactus plants is a good indication of just how dry and arid it is.
Starland campground would make a good starting point for canoeing the red deer river south to the bleriot ferry campground located 12kms downstream or an overnight float to Drumheller. The nearby town of Drumheller has several souvenir, fossil shops, restaurants, lodging, shopping, gas, grocery stores and home of the famous Royal Tyrrell Museum.
Night skies here rank #4 on the Bortle Scale.
