Description
Trailhead: Park in the ditch at the end of the guard rail located on Highwood Trail #40 highway. 10.3kms south of Highwood Pass. 190kms west of Calgary Alberta. Note: Highway #40 is closed at the Upper Lakes and Highwood House Junction from Dec 1st to June 14th for wildlife preservation.
Description: Locate the trail at the end of the guardrail. Drop down a few meters to the first stream braid flowing from Storm Creek. You may find a log or beaver dam that bridges the braid however trying to keep your feet dry is pointless. In another 50ms or so you’ll have to ford Storm Creek. An extra pair of light shoes is a good idea.
Cross the creek then follow the well worn trail along Running Rain Creek. In a short distance you’ll see a fork in the trail to your right leading up a short steep slope. Keep right as the trail follows Running Rain Creek through thick bush then eventually joins the main trail. Continue on for about an hour until you reach the meadows located below the lake.
Cross the meadows aiming for the lakes outlet stream. Backcountry campsites can be found on the south shore of the lake or you can continue following the trail as it circles the shore line. Running Rain lake is stocked with Cutthroat Trout. You’ll need a fishing license to try your luck. If you still have more energy you can hike to the top of the headwall located above the lake. Views towards Running Rain Lake, Mount Lipsett and the valley below are beautiful. Pictures below were taken in early July. You are in bear country

We hiked up above the lake to the top of the headwall and had lunch. Beautiful views.
