Description
Trailhead: Park at the Little Elbow Campground or Forget Me Not Pond 40 minutes west of Calgary. Note Highway #66 is closed at Elbow Falls from Dec 1st to May 15th.
Description: Walk up the gravel road leading to Little Elbow campground and locate the Harold Chapman pedestrian bridge crossing the Elbow River. Cross the bridge and turn left onto the equestrian trail. When the trail starts to turn southeast towards Big Elbow loop stay left trying to follow the Elbow River downstream.
In a short distance you’ll reach the Little Elbow river. Good idea to bring along a second pair of shoes. Ford the river and follow another equestrian trail about 1/2km until you see a cairn marking the trail leading off to your right. This is the start of the climb towards Forget Me Not Ridge. Work your way up some very steep scree covered switchbacks then continue on along the ridge towards the summit. The top of the ridge is a large U shape that connects two mountains.
There’s a huge cairn at the end of the ridge, possibly the largest cairn in the Canadian Rockies. Views of Moose Mountain, Moose Mountain Ice Cave, Nihahi Ridge, Prairie Mountain, Powder Face Ridge, Mount Glasgow, Mount Cornwall, Outlaw Peak, Banded Peak and Mount Romulus are stunning. The summit also offers a classic transitional view of prairies to foothills to mountains with the city of Calgary visible on the eastern horizon.

Nice hike. I brought a pair of sandals that I stashed after crossing the river.

Love this hike. Did it with the baby in the baby carrier. Steep ascent but ridge walk is nice and gentle. If you do it in the fall, your feet won’t get wet because the channel has dried up.
