Location/Description
Location: 38kms north of the town of Slave Lake Alberta. Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park.
Description: Marten River campground contains 112 well kept campsites suited for both RV’s and tents. Campsites are located throughout the surrounding spruce forest offing good privacy with a few choice sites that back onto Lesser Slave Lake.
Amenities include group camping, handicap sites, clean natural beaches, canoeing & kayaking, play grounds, picnic shelters, public phone, showers, water, power, fire wood available for sale, picnic tables, sani dump, swimming areas, boat launch, fish cleaning stations, ice fishing, hiking, wildlife and bird watching. Lesser Slave Lake offers good Northern Pike, Lake Whitefish, Walleye and Yellow Perch fishing.
Marten River campground is great for families with young children. Kids can spend hours playing on the natural sand dunes, beach and nearby playgrounds. Lesser Slave lake is one of Alberta’s largest lakes and is excellent for power boats, waterskiing, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and kayaking. Beware of severe and dangerous winds. For those who like to hike or mountain bike there are several excellent trails located nearby ranging from short walks to full day hikes.
Lesser Slave Lake is part of the Athabasca River drainage basin and has an approximate total surface area of 1160sqkms with an average depth of 11.4ms, maximum depth of 20.5ms. Marten River Provincial Park also attracts a large variety of migrating waterfowl and is a great place for birders. The Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation is located near here and offers daily guided walks.
