Location: 25kms west of Turner Valley. 75kms southwest of Calgary. Kananaskis Country Alberta.
Description: Sandy McNabb campground has 98 well treed campsites nicely suited for both RV’s and tents located within 3 separate loops. There is also a few large group camping areas that are set up for large events.
For those looking for a day outing an excellent day use picnic area is located next to the Sheep River. This campground fills fast on weekends due to it’s close proximity to the City of Calgary. Amenities include camp kitchens, dry toilets, water pumps, garbage bins, picnic tables and fire pits. Dry firewood is available here for sale in small bundles.
Sandy McNabb is popular with equestrian campers. A few campsites provide unloading ramps and hitching posts for horses. The nearby Sheep River runs crystal clear and is home to wild Cutthroat Trout, Bull Trout and Rainbow Trout. You’ll need a fishing license to try your luck. Deer, Elk, Bear and Bighorn Sheep are all around this area.
The 1.7km hike along the Sandy McNabb interpretive trail offers excellent views of the Sheep River. Sheep River Falls and Indian Oils are also located just west of here. Views of the pools and eddies along the Sheep River are beautiful and very inviting.
Night skies here rank #1 on the Bortle Scale. This is bear country, food and food related items must be stored properly.
