Location/Description
Location: West side of the #40 Kananaskis Trail highway, 55kms west of Longview. Kananaskis Country.
Description: This campground is only open in the fall after the September long weekend to the end of November and mainly used by hunters. Strawberry Equestrian Campground is situated along the Highwood river with 18 campsites for both tents and larger RV’s.
You’ll find dry toilets, hand operated water pump that may be frozen, garbage bins, picnic tables and fire pits. Dry firewood is available here for sale. This campground is nicely suited for equestrian activities. Half of the campsites include hitching posts for horses.
The nearby Highwood River runs crystal clear and is home to wild Cutthroat Trout. You’ll need a fishing license to try your luck. Deer, Elk and Bighorn Sheep are all around this area. Highwood Station is located 5kms southeast of here at the Kananaskis Trail turn off. Gas, diesel, limited grocery, sani dump and water are available. If you follow the #40 Highway north you’ll drive over Highwood Pass which is the highest paved highway in Canada. Elevation of the road at the pass is 2206ms.
Highway #40 is closed to motorized traffic from December 1st to June 15th for local wildlife preservation. During this closure time the highway is excellent for early spring cycling.
