Description
Trailhead: Park at the Upper Kananaskis Lake parking lot located in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. 156 km west of Calgary.
Description: Upper Kananaskis Lake is man made for hydro electric power and irrigation. The lake is almost empty before spring run off in mid June. There is a lot to explore in this area. The Upper Lake has a well groomed hike or bike trail that runs around the entire lake. Beautiful views of Mount Lyautey, Mount Sarrail, Mount Foch and Mount Fox can be seen along the route.
Trailheads to Rawson Lake, Hidden Lake, Fossil Falls, Astor Lake and Three Isle Lake are all located near Upper Kananaskis Lake. Both the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes have excellent boat launches for both power boats and small water craft. Canoeing the upper or lower lakes on a calm summers evening would be an unforgettable experience. Both lakes hold Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout and Bull Trout.
William Watson Lodge is located a few kms east of here. The lodge was created to provide equal access to this beautiful area for people of all abilities and it provides accommodations for seniors and those with disabilities. I tip my hat to Jean Lougheed who thought of creating this Lodge and her husband Peter Lougheed who made it happen.
